Calls to Artists: A Book About Death

A friend sent me this information. Considering my current state of mind, it seems perfectly suited to me.

A BOOK ABOUT DEATH

1000 ARTISTS CONTRIBUTE 500 POST CARDS EACH TO CREATE AN UNBOUND BOOK ABOUT DEATH.
The Emily Harvey Foundation in New York is hosting this event from September 10-22, 2009.

This show was inspired by the work of late American artist, Ray Johnson. To enter, simply create an artwork about death, including the words “A Book About Death” somewhere on it. Have 500 4″ x 6″ postcard reproductions of your work mailed to the Emily Harvey Foundation and then e-mail a small jpg copy to Matthew Rose. All works received by September 5 will be accepted to the show.

To quote the prospectus:

Visitors will be free to take cards and create their own book about death. As the cards are removed, the exhibition will disappear.

During the exhibition, a lecture/panel discussion will take place with a number of leading writers, curators, artists and collectors bringing together a number of salient ideas about death, books, mail art works, Ray Johnson and the global nature of A BOOK ABOUT DEATH.

Another words, this is a great opportunity to have your work seen by important people in New York… as well as a great chance to participate in a historically significant exhibit exploring the nature of mail-book collaborations. From what I know about her life, this is exactly the kind of work Emily Harvey would have supported.

There are other options available for the format of your submission. For the full rules, see the website for more information: A Book About Death blog.
