Congratulations to my hubby Zvonimir, who took his oath to become a United States citizen today! I am so proud of him and he is thrilled to fully enjoy all the benefits of citizenship in this great country.
He was one of nearly 300 people from over 61 countries who underwent this amazing transformation – it was a truly an inspiring event. The color guard marched out the American flag, while hundreds of Americans (and pending Americans) put their hands over their hearts and said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang along to the Star Spangled Banner. Of course, even from across the room I could see Zvony grimacing at the southern rendition and horrible keyboard accompaniment of this song… which made me laugh out loud (to the annoyance of the spectators around me). At the end of the ceremony, they played a video message from President Bush (cheesy) which was followed by an inspiring (cheesy) video clip set to the music of “I’m Proud to Be an American” by Lee Greenwood. Again, I could see Z’s smirk from across the room. He’d never heard the real song before, but he surely recognized it from the many times I’ve serenaded him with it… “karaoke style”. Overall, it was a very fun and emotional event, but we’re glad it’s finally over!
So, what did Zvonimir eat for his first meal as an official American? McDonalds! We were all so starving after sitting in the auditorium for nearly 6 hours that we would have eaten grass… but McDonalds just happened to be the first place we came across. Never have those deep fried chicken nuggets tasted so sweet! On our way back to Austin, Zvonimir & I stopped at Ikea for a small coffee and dessert. I ask you, what’s more American than a thrifty shopping spree right after your citizenship ceremony?!
I’d like to send a special thanks to my father and his wife for making the long trip out to witness this event… we love you! Another special thanks goes to all our other friends and family who couldn’t make it, but lent their support nonetheless. You guys rock!

Here’s some proof, I mean pictures, of Zvonimir’s new status as a citizen.

There is Zvonimir, afloat in a sea of immigrants.

It’s official! Ain’t he cute in his red, white & blue outfit?
