Yay for Texas Wax!

Texas Wax met again today to discuss upcoming events and to tackle problems related to the encaustic medium. I look forward to these meetings every month because of both the great company and because I’m always learning something new. For example, in addition to iron, one shouldn’t use aluminum to heat and mix the paints as it can discolor light pigments. The general consensus was that stainless steel is your safest bet for a heated pallet. Good thing those tin pots I picked up were only .99 cents, huh? Now we know!

Since the meetings are held at Bay6 Gallery, I also got an opportunity to preview the work for tonight’s Netroots Nation/Texas Kaos show (which worked out perfectly, since I won’t be able to make it). I was very, very excited to see “What Have We Become” by Marilyn Fenn since I’d previously admired the work after seeing it on her blog.

Overall, the meeting was a great success and I got to view several inspiring encaustics by the other members. We also spent a significant amount of time discussing how to achieve different textures and layering affects. I can’t wait to try some of these techniques. With any luck, I won’t come empty handed to next month’s meeting. (Almost all my wee little wax bits have arrived in the mail. Time to melt stuff! Yay!). TTFN!
